Advice on Breast Cancer Reconstruction
Risks of Reconstruction Could Outweigh Benefits
As appealing as reconstruction is, it's not the right choice for many women. Reconstruction performed immediately after a
mastectomy may interfere with certain treatments, like radiation. Reconstruction is surgery, and carries the associated risks.
Some women choose not to have another surgery after a mastectomy due to the risks and the recovery time. Reconstruction may not
provide the outcome you're hoping for. Carefully discuss the procedure, risks and your expectations with your doctor and your
loved ones. Weigh the pros and cons. Ultimately, you have to decide if the surgery is best for you, on both an emotional and a
physical basis.
