Breast reconstruction surgery is typically done by a plastic surgeon. If you decide to have reconstruction after a mastectomy, do some research to find a plastic surgeon that you feel comfortable with. You'll want to look for someone who has experience performing breast surgery on post-mastectomy women. Do your homework. Find a doctor who will be realistic and give you a good idea of what your breasts will look like after surgery. Reconstruction probably won't make you a centerfold, and a competent surgeon should tell you that. You may have different considerations if your mastectomy and reconstruction are being done at the same time. Talk with your primary care doctor about your options, and ask for recommendations for a surgeon.
