The Odds of Dying from Breast Cancer
Experts estimate that over 42,000 women and 460 men will die from breast cancer in 2005. Many of these deaths will
be women who were diagnosed years ago, when screening and treatment were not as advanced as they are today.
Those whose cancer is caught in the earliest stages face very good odds of survival - as high as 98%. Although
survival rates are quite a bit lower for those diagnosed later, every woman stands a very good chance of surviving
five years from the time of diagnosis. Don't think about the worst case scenario. The disease is highly treatable
and advancements in treatment are being made every day. Maintain a positive attitude, expect the best, and keep in
close contact with your doctor. If you're cancer-free, be sure to keep up with screenings and other preventive measures.
