Making Sense of Your Breast Cancer Prognosis
The burning question on the mind of every newly-diagnosed breast cancer patient is: Can I beat this? If you ask your doctor, you may hear the word 'prognosis.' This word simply means how you're likely to fare during treatment. It's usually a statistic about women your age, in your general health, with cancer similar to yours. This is an informal way to label patients, and, like every statistic, has a margin of error. You can decide whether you want to hear your prognosis, and you decide what to do with the information you receive about your diagnosis. Remember that you are not other women, and they are not you. Whatever your prognosis, it's simply a statistic and your outcome may be different.
