The Likelihood of Breast Cancer for the Average Woman
Breast cancer is the most common cancer to strike women. About 250,000 cases are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. The odds of getting breast cancer increase with age, as almost all women with breast cancer are older than 40. A commonly quoted statistic is the women have a one in seven chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. This statistic only takes into account women who live to be at least 90. The odds that a woman in her 50s will get breast cancer are only 1 in 25, because she is younger. Try not to get too alarmed when reading breast cancer statistics. Keep in mind that six out of seven 90-year-old women, statistically speaking, will never have had breast cancer.
